Philips 7-inch PET722 DVD player: cause you’ll never reach the top
Filed under: Portable Audio, Portable Video

Philips has this new 7-inch portable DVD player they’re scheming to release from the cold, damp origins of their Holland HQ. The PET722 is said to support a “variety of disc formats” including JPEG and MP3 files. A “smart sliding design” will keep you comfy as you squander your remaining hours watching other people’s adventurous lives from the safety of your own toilet. Gezellig!

- Walt Disney goes for Japan
According to Reuters, the second biggest US entertainment company also known as Walt Disney, will attack the Japanese market next year with cellphones being their main attraction. Working in coordination with SoftBank, both companies will be producing cellphones and online content. Taking in consideration that Japan is a huge market that has top-notch mobile phones, the adventure in Asia has high chances of being a success, but on the other hand, the true Walt Disney fans are mostly children and teens, so it might not be that easy to penetrate and succeed in Japan.
- Alicia Keys MySpace page hacked
In the web-tech world, MySpace has been consistent in showing how bad security issues exist in the social network site, and the latest proof is that thee Alicia Keys page got hacked. Other not so famous band pages that also got jacked up include Greements of Fortune, and Dykeenies.
How it works:
Users visiting the Alicia Keys MySpace page didn’t have to do much in order to get infected with the so called hack. By clicking almost anywhere on the page, they would get redirected to another site that asked to install a special code in order to view a video. Obviously, the codec is actually malware used by hackers to gain access to private information such as email or even MySpace accounts.
At this time, the extra bit of code that created the redirection function has been deleted and visitors won’t get virtually attacked, so there is no need to worry (for now).

SanDisk’s Vaulter Disk: flash-based drive module for laptops

Details are light, but apparently SanDisk will be announcing a device called the Vaulter Disk next year, which will basically be something like an SSD intermediary — a large bank of fast flash memory for speeding up platter-based drive access. Sounds a lot like the lovechild of RAMdisk and a hybrid hard drive, but we won’t know more until a later date.
Update: We’ve got more details! It’ll come in 8GB and 16GB sizes, and is intended to host the laptop’s operating system and select user data, leaving apps, media, and everything else to the platter drives. So calling it an SSD intermediary is pretty accurate. It’ll be available to OEMs early next year.

Alienware M15x / M17x laptops revealed with NVIDIA 8800M GTX
Filed under: Laptops
It’s no secret that Alienware laptops have long loved to pack some serious NVIDIA-based heat, and judging by screenshots (another shown after the jump) of a reported slip up earlier today, those scouting a new extraterrestrial rig might want to hold out just a tick longer. It looks as if the firm will soon be unveiling (officially, that is) the 15-inch M15x and 17-inch M17x gaming laptops, both of which will seemingly be available with the 512MB NVIDIA GeForce Go 8800M GTX graphics processor. As for the 8M-series GPU, it’ll boast full DirectX 10 support, the Lumenex Engine, second-generation PureVideo HD technology, a 500MHz core clock, 1,250MHz shader clock and an 800MHz memory clock. Regarding the actual lappies, all we know is that the smaller of the two will be available with a 1,440 x 900 resolution display, 2.2GHz Core 2 Duo processor, 1GB of RAM, a 120GB HDD, dual-layer DVD writer and Vista Home Premium. We’ll be keeping an ear to the ground for something official, but don’t worry, it ought not be long now.
[Thanks, Andrew]

Wii to drop MP3 support, add AAC in Photo Channel update
Filed under: Gaming, Portable Audio
While we’re sure that some Wii updates have been more highly regarded than others, it seems that MP3 diehards will want to pass on a forthcoming Photo Channel update if you just can’t bear to lose support for your favorite music format. Apparently, the aforementioned channel will be revamped early next month, and while users will then be able to personalize their menu by implanting an SD-based digital image into the Photo Channel icon, gamers who previously used their Wii to play back MP3s will no longer be able to do so. For whatever reason, the Big N will be axing MP3 support and adding in AAC compatibility, and the company even goes out of its way to make sure that you realize downgrading will not possible once you install v1.1. Mark it down folks — don’t be left full of regret (if you’re partial to MP3, that is) after carelessly downloading an update without reading the changelog first.
