NEC debuts fax machine that emails documents to your cell phone

NEC SP-NA640

How many of you have been contemplating your next fax machine purchase? Unless I’m gravely mistaken, few of you get excited over the prospect of purchasing one. It’s really sad that they are still so widely used; one would think that we would have figured out a better way to transmit documents by now. The good news is that thanks to NEC, you can actually fax documents directly to someone’s cell phone.

The SP-NA640 from NEC doesn’t actually fax documents to cell phones per se, but rather scans them and sends the document out via email. There’s no information on how it will be displayed on one’s cell phone, so don’t expect everyone to be able to read it. I have to give NEC some credit, this is probably the most interesting feature that I’ve seen on a fax machine in some time. There’s no word on pricing, however, from what I can tell it appears to only be available in Japan at this time.

Tok Tak Plug Plays Your MP3 Files

tok_tak.jpgEverything relating to technology usually focuses on how small they can make an item. When the new iPod Nanos came out, after having a 2nd gen Nano, I never thought they could make anything smaller, lightweight, with more storage and with a bigger screen - but they had. The iPod Shuffle is super-tiny and I thought, there’s no way a functional MP3 player can be made smaller than this! Even the Ultimate Smallest MP3 player has a screen and it is roughly the size of a postage stamp. How can anything be made smaller than any of these things and still play my music?

Designer Tae-wan Kim has proven me wrong. The Tok Tak MP3 player is the smallest player I’ve ever seen. The entire device looks like a standard audio jack connected to a pair of earphones. No clip, no nothing, it just dangles off the headphones. You may garner a few strange looks from people when it looks like you’re just wearing a pair of headphones that aren’t connected to anything. But how convenient would this player be? It would easily fit in your pocket, you wouldn’t have to worry about damaging a screen or scuffing up its glossy finish.

The Tok Tak also comes with a base station where you can plug in your Tok Tak to recharge, to upload new music and to act as a joystick controller to listen to your music through the base station’s built-in speaker.

No words on pricing or availability, but this is definitely something to keep an eye out for in the future. I think this would be perfect for my desk at work.

Polaroid and Zink develop Digital Instant Mobile Photo Printer

We’d heard through the grapevine that the Zink portable printer camera would be getting boxed up and sent out to eager customers late this year, but now it seems as though Polaroid has jumped in for a bit of the action. Realistically, you shouldn’t be too surprised that the former king of instant photography is syncing up with Zink, and we must say, this whole partnership conjures up some pretty fond memories of shakin’ snapshots in tense anticipation as we waited for the scene to develop. Nostalgia aside, the firm’s Digital Instant Mobile Photo Printer does indeed sport the Zink logo, and sure enough, it produces borderless 2- x 3-inch color prints instantly when fed images from a digicam or cellphone. We don’t have a firmed up release date in front of us or anything, but all signs are pointing to soon — very soon.
