Envision kicks out trio of Omni-series LCD HDTVs

Envision understands that the people need choices, and just in case neither of the two LCD HDTVs that the firm unleashed last month tickled your fancy, here comes a trio of new ones to pore over. All three units sport a 1,366 x 768 resolution, eight-millisecond response time, ATSC / Clear QAM tuners, integrated speakers, a headphone jack, S/PDIF port and a glossy black finish. On the high(er)-end, we’ve got the 42-inch L42W761, which features a 1,200:1 contrast ratio, twin HDMI inputs and a respectable $999 pricetag. The 32-inch L32W761 differs from its big bro by offering up a 1,500:1 contrast ratio, while the 26-inch L26W761 musters an 800:1 CR. These two will ring up at $649 and $479, respectively, and are available as we speak from a number of fine retailers, but if you’ve got your eye on the 42-incher, you’ll be waiting till the 23rd — yeah, Black Friday — to take one home.

iPod downloading gets REAL

REAL PLAYER

News from the Giz is that after a brief beta test, Real Media is set to release a new version of RealPlayer that will allow iPod users to download and play Real Media on their 5th Generation video iPods. As part of the As RealPlayer Plus package, the application will give users the ability to download Web videos to your iPod with a single click.

The near forty dollar ($40) application will also burn those same web videos to DVD, rip, mix and burn CDs and MP3s, contain a 10-band equalizer for music mixing, and an analog recording feature to allow ripping of old album, cassette tapes and voice recordings that can then be converted into digital files.
The later spate of features is nothing new, but the ability to download digital media directly to the iPod is something that has been solely the domain of iTunes. And if Real Media has figured out how to synch and install video onto the iPod, you can bet that they know how to do it for music downloads as well and the web video capability is merely a trial balloon to see if Cuptertino will lower the litigious hammer.
But come on, it’s REAL PLAYER … the hallmark of lackluster audio and video quality. So how much of a threat can it be?

Still, for the option, I’m sure many iPod users will be lining up to give it a go.

PhotoVu’s 17-inch RSS-enabled digital photo frame, the 1765W

Filed under: Digital Cameras, Displays, Peripherals

We’ve seen a few WiFi and RSS enabled digital photo frames from PhotoVu in the past, but they’ve all been overly large for our city-sized living spaces, which is why we’re happy to see the somewhat more reasonable 17-inch 1765w make its debut. The 16:10 frame reads all the obvious digital camera formats, but unlike most other frames, it includes plugins for popular apps like Picasa and iPhoto that let you handle file management directly inside your photo app, instead of having to play the scale-and-export game. Like all of PhotoVu’s other frames, the 1765w also features an RSS reader and web server for completely remote administration, and integration with services like Flickr, SmugMug, and .mac. Of course, all this hotness is going to cost you — the 1765w runs a steep $699 direct from PhotoVu.

GSM Association votes to support LTE

Chalk up another one for the LTE team, as it has yet another big proponent in the ever-raging 4G war. Not even two months after Verizon gave LTE the nod over WiMAX / UMB, the board of the GSM Association has now voted to support Long Term Evolution as the mobile broadband solution to follow HSPA. The GSMA also noted that it would be interfacing with other outfits / organizations that are developing LTE technology and begin work with the NGMN (Next Generation Mobile Networks) initiative. Furthermore, Rob Conway, the entity’s CEO, reportedly called on the International Telecommunication Union to “ensure the industry wins the spectrum needed to offer mobile broadband.” ‘Course, we’ve already heard that things are shaping up nicely (in testing) for the standard, but winning over the GSMA is likely to incite some serious celebrating in the offices of LTE backers everywhere.

Georgia Tech researchers demonstrate blowable user interface

Although a team from Kent State already whipped up a method for turning one’s PC on / off with a simple puff of air, two gurus at Georgia Tech have created a full-blown (ahem) breath-controlled user interface. The low-cost, localized blowable UI — cleverly dubbed BLUI — apparently utilizes a built-in microphone along with a C++ application that computes the blowing inputs. Once installed, users can puff on either side of the screen in order to scroll left / right, icons can be selected depending on the fierceness of the puff and games could integrate the technology in to add another level of interactivity. Notably, the duo behind the creation is already investigating how to avoid false positives (i.e. inputs from nature when outside on a blustery day), and while we’re not sure how close this stuff is to becoming commercially available (if at all), you can take a look at a videoed demonstration just beyond the break. [Warning: PDF read link]

“The Pleo Song” takes our breath away

It’s no secret: songs about gadgets are a scourge upon the earth. And that’s why they’re awesome. The latest of these little ditties that’ll have you humming in the shower tomorrow morning — and raving like a lunatic the day after — is “The Pleo Song,” courtesy of RobotsRule. The song was written to celebrate Ugobe’s announcement of 30 day shipping notices for Pleo, which we suppose is as good an excuse as any to write a gratingly bad song about a robotic dinosaur. “Remember the heart of a child knows that love goes with Pleo.” If you still think you can stomach it after that little teaser, the YouTube version is after the break.

Bacon Wallet For Your Bacon Lover

aw0412.jpgBacon plays such a role in most people’s lives. Who doesn’t love a BLT or bacon with your eggs? There’s products made for human and animal alike all using the flavor, appearance and smell of bacon. Like the commercial says “there’s only one thing that smells like bacon and that’s bacon!” People are even marketing seasoning salt made to make things taste like bacon. There are bandages with the likeness of bacon and there are any number of paper products made with the deliciousness of bacon staring you right back in the face.

If you are a bacon-oholic (or know someone who is), what better gift to give them this holiday season than a Bacon Wallet? Actual bacon? Well, yes, but you can’t fold real bacon up, hold your money in it and stick it in your pocket! Not without a lot of mess, anyway.

Priced at a reasonable $9.95 over at What on Earth, the Bacon Wallet is perfect for stocking stuffers or a whimsical way to give them cash or gift cards instead of the same old, boring envelope.

Strips of bacon are photo-realisticlly printed on the inside and outside of this vinyl, one-fold wallet. Holds up to 6 credit cards and has room for all the cash you care to carry, within reason. Dimensions are 3.75″ by 4″ folded.

However, this products does not smell like bacon and I would highly not recommend eating it in a sandwich or with your morning sunny-side-up eggs. I would use the actual bacon in this case.

LG.Philips readying smudge-free computer displays

LG.Philips seems to never get bored with finding ways to better the displays our dear eyes scan so, so much, and we’ll be straight up, it’s hard not to get excited over its latest development. Apparently, the outfit has conjured up a method for ensuring that LCD panels resist smudges, and if that wasn’t enough to pique your interest, the technology should also enable the screen to shun dirt, dust, fingerprints and permanent ink. Essentially, the new panel “employs a principle similar to that used on non-stick frying pans,” but it isn’t handing out any more secrets beyond that. Think you can handle even more good news? Mass production of said panels is slated for the first half of next year, so let the countdown to smudge-free mobile computing begin, eh?

NAT Audio’s Magma is one beastly tube amplifier

We’ve seen all sorts of fanciful tube amplifiers over the years, but none have intimidated us quite like NAT Audio’s Magma. This brute is the self-proclaimed “most powerful single-ended tube amplifier on the market,” and it can churn out 160-watts at 4- and 8-ohms with a frequency response of 10Hz to 100kHz. Additionally, this thing weighs in at 88-pounds, measures 11.8- x 25.2- x 14.2-inches and relies on a 6N1P-EV, a 6N30P-DR and a Eimac 450TH tube to get the job done. If you’re craving more specs on this Class A monster, we’ve got ‘em: an input impedance of 100-kohms, input sensitivity of 2.7V RMS for full power output, gain of 22.5 dB at 8-ohms and a pricetag of $55,000 per pair. Check out a few more angles after the jump, won’tcha?

Spaghetti Periscope

spaghetti-periscope.jpgThink spaghetti, and chances are you’ll have flashbacks of that lovely little Italian restaurant tucked away in a corner somewhere, with smells of fresh oven-baked pizza wafting through the air in addition to a delectable plate of spaghetti in front of you. Not with this Spaghetti Periscope though.

‘Q’ has outdone himself with this one!! A Spaghettii box that brilliantly turns in to a periscope for seeing over the tops of walls or around corners. So clever - even we can’t believe it! Suitable for 7 years and over.

Now that’s a hell lotta exclamation marks to describe a product. You can pick up the non-edible Spaghetti Periscope for £7.94 after taxes. Something more subtle would have been better IMHO.

DoCoMo: We don?t really care about Android

Better Blogging software from MS

Live Writer

We’re all used to bashing Microsoft. Security holes, unstable software, monopolistic tendencies - you can point fingers in all those directions. But if you’ve been watching for the past few years you’ll see that things have been changing. Developers are much more in contact with the community via blogs. Stability is much improved over the bad old days (if you think XP is unstable, you’re too young to remember Windows 3.1…) MS Products are even starting to play nicely with non-MS software.

Which brings me to the Windows Live product suite. Specifically Windows Live Writer. It’s really rather good.

Live writer is a desktop blogging application - think of it as an HTML editor, customised for use with Blogging engines. So what makes it so neat? For starters, it offers you a WISYWIG view of your post-to-be. That’s trickier than it sounds, because to do that it has to connect to your blog, download your specific styles and blog layout template then offer you an editing view based around a single post. It also has standard HTML editing functions such as table and style editing and a preview function to show the post as it will appear on the blog.

Dealing with images is easy - just drag and drop them from wherever they live on the PC into your post. They’ll get uploaded along with the post. I think that’s the killer feature for me, I can upload an image and the text in one hit from one place without navigating a sometimes painful web UI.

Spell checking? Integrated and automatic.

When you install it you get the choice of creating your own blog on Live spaces - fair enough if you don’t already have one. If you already have a blog (say, CG for example ;-) ) it asks you for your login details. Then it connects, downloads its styles and you’re away.

The really cool (and most unexpected) thing is that it supports a variety of non-MS blogging engines. The list includes Wordpress, Blogger and of course Live spaces amongst others.

Give it a go. I’ll certainly be using it more in the future (assuming this inaugural post makes it up to the blog intact that is!).

Sony Ericsson recalls all W910s sold on Orange

Early adopters of Sony Ericsson’s W910i on the Orange network may have noticed that their phones suffer a tiny little flaw — shutting down 10 seconds into a phone call. The bug only wormed its way into a small number of W910s sold by Orange, but the two companies aren’t taking any chances — they’ve recalled every W910i sold thus far for inspection and repair / replacement. Models in stores now are apparently fine, but we’re hearing scattered reports of replacements having the same problem as well. No word on what’s causing the problem, but we can’t seem to get through to SE to get more details — the call keeps ending, for some reason.

Green House’s Gaudi cam is nothing special

Nothing standout here, but that doesn’t mean this little flash-based camera from Green House isn’t right for someone. The Gaudi sports an SD card slot for capturing your VGA video, QVGA video and 5 megapixel stills, with a 1.7-inch screen to preview it all. Gaudi maxes out on 2GB SD cards, and there’s nothing fancy happening in codec land: video is recorded in AVI. That said, this thing goes for a mere 13,800 Yen ($125 US), so if you’re in Japan and need a nice “disposable” tourist-cam… well, you could probably just use your phone and save on the bulk, so forget the whole deal.

InFocus rolls out Work Big IN35, IN35W, and IN37 projectors

Those looking for something a little more business-minded (and more expensive) than InFocus’ $500 Play Big IN1 project now have a trio of new options to consider from the company, which recently introduced its new “Work Big” IN35, IN35W and IN37 models. As you might expect, the differences between the three aren’t huge, with each making use of DLP technology and each boasting a 1,400:1 contrast ratio, along with an XGA resolution on the IN35 and IN37, and a wider WXGA resolution on the appropriately-named IN35W. The IN37 also packs a relatively hefty 3,000 ANSI lumens, compared to 2,500 lumens on the other two. The prices aren’t all that far apart either, with the IN35, IN35W and IN37 running $1,099, $1,399, and $1,299, respectively.
