Dell’s building an Android phone to be unveiled next month? We’re not holding our breath.

Stick this one firmly in the rumor category, since all the verbiage that’s been thrown around about this story still traces back to one single source: a slightly ill-informed article done up in MarketingWeek in the UK. The article cites unspecified “senior industry sources,” and goes on about how this is Dell and Google working closely together on what is more or less the “Gphone.” Since we have no reason to believe Google is going to jeopardize its Android OS by getting extra-friendly with one specific manufacturer, the primary weight we can give to this rumor is that fact that Dell picked up a former Motorola executive, Ron Garriques, to run its Global Consumer Group early last year. Other rumors have cropped up over the years about Dell moving in this direction, so it certainly wouldn’t signal the apocalypse if a Dell-branded Android phone does show up at this rumored unveiling at 3GSM, but giving how early on Android is at the moment, we’ll believe it when we see it.

Hands-on with the Pentax K20D DSLR

Lookee here, the K20D, Pentax’s flagship entry in the DSLR race and replacement for the K10D. Good looking stuff here, and right off the bat you can see it’s a step above the K200D: a proper command dial in place of buttons on the back of that dust-proof (not just resistant) and weather-resistant body. But the beauty’s more than skin deep — check out the 14.6-megapixel CMOS sensor, Live View 2.7-inch LCD and ISO sensitivity that peaks out at 3,200 (thanks, CMOS!). And in case you were wondering, no “scene” modes at this level, either.

Researchers at University of California L.A have for the first time developed a implantable camera that would lead us to the possibilities of Bionic eye in near future. The tiny camera(Intraocular Camera for Retinal Prosthesis) developed by Michelle Hauer and her team is small enough to be implanted directly on the eye’s lens and feeds image data to a chip at the back of the eye which can be either used to aid the blind or can be used in the future robots .

The patent application for the research says :

Transmission of the signals from the intraocular camera to a microstimulator driver circuit may be accomplished either by a wired or wireless communication device. Power and control signals may be provided to the intraocular camera by a wired or wireless communication device, or optically by means of ambient illumination or an optical beam.

Kurzweil_Blind_Reader_CellphoneInventor Ray Kurzweil in partnership with NFB (National Federation of the Blind)have developed a camera based reading software knfbReader that works with Nokia N82 5 megapixel camera and has the ability to read out the text from the pictures of printed page. It also has a voice guiding recognition system that would help them to take pictures from an optimal framing point. Press a button and most printed materials will be easily read in clear synthetic speech.

Excerpts from press release:

Blind users hear the contents of the document read in clear synthetic speech, while users who can see the screen and those with learning disabilities can enlarge, read, track, and highlight printed materials using the phone’s large and easy-to-read display. The combination of text-to-speech and tracking features makes interpreting text much easier for individuals with learning disabilities.

Using the state-of-the-art Nokia N82 cell phone running on the powerful Symbian operating system with its integrated high-resolution camera, the Reader puts the best available character-recognition software together with text-to-speech conversion technology–all in a device that fits in the palm of your hand. The product includes Kurzweil’s unique intelligent image processing software to enhance real-world images captured by a handheld device.

Blind users will have access to all of the functions featured in the most advanced cell phones on the market including video and music playback, GPS, wireless communications, photography, e-mail, text messaging, calendar and task functions, and more. The combination Reader and cell phone weighs 4.2 ounces and can store thousands of printed pages with easily obtainable extra memory. Users can transfer files to computers or Braille notetakers in seconds.
