A woman’s guide to buying speakers

Men and women see things differently. Take audio: A guy might be impressed with a big honkin’ speaker, but a woman probably sees a hideous box. Being a guy, I might not be the most sensitive to what females want from a hi-fi, so I’m more than willing to …

Corega intros compact CG-1SG24TV 1seg TV

Although you’re better off looking Sanyo’s direction if you need one that’s waterproof, Corega has a couple of new micro-TVs for those who can manage to keep their distance from the waterways. The CG-1SG24TV is set to arrive in black / white motifs and feature a 2.4-inch 320 x 240 resolution LCD, built-in 1seg TV tuner, an electronic program guide (EPG), integrated stereo speakers and a headphone jack to boot. Furthermore, this pocket-friendly unit gets all the power it needs from a pair of AAA cells, and you’ll even get a set of earbuds thrown in for good measure. Expect this one to land early next month for around ¥12,800 ($119).

Hollandia’s Platinum-Luxe Elite bed includes home theater

We’ve seen some pretty fantasmical beds in our day, but none of them make you want to stay in it forever quite like this one. Hollandia’s Platinum-Luxe Elite, which probably took a few design cues from Mork & Mindy’s abode, is far from being your average sleep system, as this thing sports a mattress made from naturally ventilated, hypo-allergenic Vita Talalay latex covered in aloe vera fibers and telescopic head supports that can prop your noggin up for those late-night reading sessions. But that’s not even the best part — you can also look forward to checking out its 32-inch Sony HDTV, BRAVIA 5.1-channel surround sound system, five-disc DVD / CD changer and the obligatory iPod dock whenever counting sheep fails you. Only problem? The $35,000 price tag.

Sony unveils two new large-venue HD projectors, the VPL-FW300L and VPL-FH300L

Filed under: Displays, HDTV, Home Entertainment

Sony dropped two new large-venue projectors today, the 7000-lumen VPL-FW300L and the 6000-lumen VPL-FH300L. Designed for larger applications like ballrooms, museums, large classrooms, event centers, and movie theaters, the FW300L sports a 1366 x 800 resolution while the FH300L goes up to 2048 x 1080. Both units are housed in the same round chassis that maximizes airflow while keeping fan noise down, and feature dual 275W lamps for both redundancy and reduced energy consumption. Sony says the target application for both models is pre-show advertising before movies in movie theaters, but we’re certain a least a couple of you are getting ready to drop the $27K (FW300L) or $40K (FH300L) to deck out your home theater.

US based M2E power is working on a self charging generator/battery technology that utilizes the kinetic energies of the movement and transform it into usable electric power that could power a cell phone easily. They have already developed a rechargeable battery that works on kinetic energy alone and can be charged by the movement of the user like walking, driving.

The material needed to develop these batteries is already available with a little more price than the lithium ion batteries but is justified as the new batteries could increase the battery life upto 3-7 times compared to the normal mobile batteries. These batteries also use 30-40% less heavy materials in comparison with the conventional batteries.

M2E(Motion To Energy) is currently being developed to provide U.S. soldiers on the battlefield with continuously self-recharging power for mission-critical electronics. Future applications will include everything from cell phones to large-scale wind and ocean wave power generators.

And don’t be surprised if you see someone moving their hands to recharge their phone batteries.

Eee PC mod brings some internal Bluetooth

The Asus Eee PC isn’t missing many must-have specs right out of the box, but there’s always going to be a reason or three for some internal Bluetooth. Luckily, the hack really isn’t too terribly difficult as demonstrated by tnkgrl — as long as you’ve got a basic idea about what you’re doing when it comes to a few stray USB wires and a motherboard. It involves a standard USB Bluetooth dongle stripped to its essentials and hooked up to the mini PCIe slot that also hosts the Eee PC’s wireless card. The hack doesn’t mess with your original wireless, and provides the sweet, sweet Bluetooths to XP and the standard Xandros OS. And speaking of Xandros, someone’s also gone through the trouble of getting their WM6 HTC TyTN up and tethered with the Eee — which seems like a natural next step after you manage the tnkgrl hack, but we’re not the boss of you.
